What is a private plate?

In terms of numbers plates, the term private plate covers a multitude of options. Years ago, the more traditional number plate dealers would always refer to a private plate as a cherished plate. This was long before DVLA began releasing prefix marks along with previously un-issued dateless private plates onto the market. Thus a private plate or cherished registration would often be a mark of sentimental value which had been in the family for a long time - hence the term "cherished".
